Bleeding Heart classes

We have a variety of classes to meet everyone’s schedule. See our class descriptions and find the perfect fit to help you meet your fitness goals.

Intro to the Kettlebell Swing

This free, 30 minute class focuses on the kettlebell swing, our most fundamental exercise. You will learn how to perform the hardstyle kettlebell swing correctly so that you can jump into any of our other classes safely and confidently.

In this class , we focus on the major kettlebell lifts: the swing, the squat, the deadlift, the press, the snatch, and the Turkish get-up. The emphasis will be on perfect reps, not speed, but as with any kettlebell work, there will be a cardio element.

kettlebell speed

In this class, we place the emphasis on using kettlebells and other plyometric tools to increase speed, agility, and quickness. It is a high energy and high intensity class guaranteed to make you harder, better, faster, stronger.

Skills clinics

Each 30 minute skills clinic will focus on a single kettlebell exercise, movement of skill, like the clean, snatch, swing or Turkish get-up. These clinics focus on form and technique and are taught by StrongFirst certified trainers.

Intro to Practical self defense

YOU MUST TAKE THIS CLASS BEFORE ATTENDING PRACTICAL SELF DEFENSE CLASS. This class is an 60 minute long class focusing on practical self defense. Regardless of size, age, or gender, the striking and defensive skills learned in this class will make you safer and more confident.

Childcare for $3 an hour? Let us  watch the kids while you watch your form. Our dedicated childcare providers will keep your kids occupied with fun and healthy activities at a price you can actually afford. We want our members to focus all of their energy on their workouts during class time, and leaving your little ones with a qualified caretaker goes a long way towards getting you in the mood. Purchase single sessions for $3 or a pack of 10 for $30.

intro to the turkish getup

This free, 30 minute class will cover the basics of the Turkish Getup, one of our most fundamental lifts and skills at BHKC. It is not required before taking a regular class, but you should plan on taking it during your first few weeks attending the gym.

bodyweight and Mobility

For half of this class we focus on the major bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, single leg squat variations, hanging leg raises, and other calisthenics. The other half of the class emphasizes dynamic mobility through animal movements, yoga flows, and joint mobilization.

If you could only do two exercises for the rest of your life, they should be the kettlebell swing and the Turkish get-up. These classes will focus on the technique and skill of these two critical movements within a very simple, yet sinister, workout.

bhkc yoga

BHKC yoga classes are taught in the "vinyasa" style, linking one pose to the next. The pace is moderate but challenging, with a focus on controlled, deliberate movement. This approach builds isometric strength, increases joint mobility, and sharpens the mindfulness necessary for balance.  Rather than simply "stretching", the goal of the flexibility work here is to increase range-of-motion.

Kickboxing level 1

In this class, the major focus is on boxing and kickboxing striking fundamentals while getting in a good workout. Pad holding basics and safety will also be a major part of the class. With time you'll learn the joys of being both an experienced striker and an experienced pad holder.

Kids Academy and family workouts

Kids ages 4-12.

Kids Academy classes are for kids ages 7-11, we focus on the fundamentals of movement to create 30 minutes of full body strength, mobility, and core in a fun and team filled environment. Leave your little ones in better shape than when you left them and get your child started in their love for fitness.

Family Classes are for kids of all ages and their parents. This fun filled class will get the whole family sweating and laughing at the same time.

I have never been more committed to getting strong as I have been since starting here. Tana and Holly are extremely dedicated and patient trainers with a balance between being supportive and pushing you a little outside your comfort zone each time. It’s fun, welcoming and the day is not complete if you don’t get your “kettle hell’ in. I love it, and now my house mates have caught the bug, and we all go together every Saturday morning. Thank you for creating an amazing, fun, and inspiring place to come to each day!

tana ross

Tana is a native Oregonian and lover of trees, rain, mountains and the Oregon coast. A lifelong athlete, Tana earned her degree in Literature, Psychology, and basketball from Claremont McKenna College in southern California. She is a former high school English teacher and stay at home mom. In 2010 she discovered kettlebells and never looked back. Currently, she is proud to be a StrongFirst Certified Level 2 Kettlebell Instructor, has completed the StrongFirst Sinister Challenge, and is a Level 1 Animal Flow Instructor. When she’s not at the gym, Tana and her wife Holly are watching their three children play soccer, lacrosse, jiu jitsu, or any number of other activities; working in her backyard, or enjoying the food and people of Portland. The family also loves snowboarding, reading, movies, and music.

Bleeding Hearts Trainer Lara Messersmith-Glavin

Lara Messersmith-Glavin

Lara is StrongFirst Level 2 certified, and brings with her years of experience in team sports (primarily basketball) and various fighting arts, including an advanced belt in Tum Pai Kajukenbo and medals in submission grappling. Inside the gym, she focuses on careful technique and individual development.  She takes a holistic approach to training, seeing physical health and strength as fundamentally linked with emotional and social well-being.  She loves the community aspect of Bleeding Hearts, and values the supportive, body-positive atmosphere created by the trainers and the clients.

Outside the gym, when Lara isn’t teaching, writing, or organizing, she’s often found onstage doing spoken word performance.  She’s also a mom, a pirate, and an arm-wrestling champ.

Rachel Sterry Bleeding Hearts Trainer.JPG

Rachel Sterry

Rachel grew up in Louisville, KY and made her way to Portland via Maine, and Seattle picking up her undergraduate degree from Colby college, a license in Naturopathic medicine, power yoga teacher training, NASM personal training certificate, a husband, two step-kids and a baby along the way.

By day, she seeks to help moms regain and balance their health. By night she loves furthering her knowledge of body mechanics, form, and strength patterns. Rachel believes that health stems from the interplay between movement, nourishment and restoration, and finding the Bleeding Hearts Kettlebell Club has been an integral part of her own perfect health combo.

When not in the gym, Rachel fills her time by practicing medicine, bike commuting, doing yoga, experimenting with new recipes, gardening and weekend hikes with her family.  Read more about Rachel at her website, fitmamapdx.

Lacey Hamerin

Lacey is a Portland native who grew up in an active and athletic household. Softball tournaments often doubled as family vacations. She started swinging kettlebells in 2013 because she was tired of riding the elliptical over and over at the big box gym. Lacey is StrongFirst Level 1 certified. She believes it’s not just the size of the bell that makes a person stronger, it’s practice and discipline. She views fitness, exercise and kettlebells as an important outlet and a vital part of a person’s overall well-being.

Lacey loves being part of the BHKC family, which is very service and community oriented. When she’s not at the gym, she’s either selling houses (she doubles as a real estate agent) or spending time with her longtime boyfriend, Joe. They love to travel and have other random adventures.

Eloise Hoatlin

Eloise has lived in Portland since her family moved at age 9. She is currently enrolled at PCC in addictions counseling. Eloise plans to focus her counseling career on helping others by using the benefits of exercise to support living a life of sustainable recovery. She didn't find her athleticism until just a few years ago and now is an avid runner and lover of all things fitness. She started as a client at the gym when it opened and they pretty much haven't been able to get rid of her since, so getting her SF1 Kettlebell Certification was a natural choice. Eloise loves the versatility of kettlebells in gaining strength, technique, endurance, and for cross-training in other sports. She is also founder and Captain of the gym's Run Club, as well as organizer of group races and other fun gym group adventures. She loves BHKC's dedication to community, it's supportive environment, and the flexibility it allows to bring her son to workouts. Eloise understands first-hand the value and benefits regular exercise brings to all aspects of life and loves helping people find their motivation to achieve and exceed their goals. When not at school, the gym, or her other job, she loves spending time with her equally active son, JP, or baking something fun in the kitchen.

Jeff Chiu

Jeff grew up in Silver Spring, MD and earned a biology degree at the University of Maryland College Park. Jeff worked with the USDA entomology department for several years and during this time discovered a passion for martial arts after being exposed to Krav Maga. Eventually practicing turned into being a certified Krav Maga instructor and teaching students from 2006 to 2013. Krav maga was a gateway to other martial arts such as wrestling, brazilian jiujitsu, MMA, and most extensively into the striking arts of muay thai and western boxing.

Training injuries eventually led Jeff to the wonders of acupuncture and herbal medicine. Jeff moved to Portland to study at the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine and eventually graduate with a Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. When not teaching kickboxing & boxing classes at BHKC he is building his acupuncture practice at Inner Gate Acupuncture. It has been several years since he's taught but he is very thankful to Tana and BHKC for the opportunity share his love of martial arts and is looking forward to meeting the BHKC family!
