Bleeding Heart classes

We have a variety of classes—ranging from 30 to 60 minutes—to meet everyone’s schedule. See our class descriptions and find the perfect fit to help you meet your fitness goals.

Intro to the Kettlebell Swing

THIS CLASS IS REQUIRED BEFORE TAKING ANY OTHER BHKC CLASS.

This free, 30 minute class focuses on the kettlebell swing, our most fundamental exercise. You will learn how to perform the hardstyle kettlebell swing correctly so that you can jump into any of our other classes safely and confidently.

KETTLEBELL strength

In this class , we focus on the major kettlebell lifts: the swing, the squat, the deadlift, the press, the snatch, and the Turkish get-up. The emphasis will be on perfect reps, not speed, but as with any kettlebell work, there will be a cardio element.

kettlebell speed

In this class, we place the emphasis on using kettlebells and other plyometric tools to increase speed, agility, and quickness. It is a high energy and high intensity class guaranteed to make you harder, better, faster, stronger.

Skills clinics

Each 30 minute skills clinic will focus on a single kettlebell exercise, movement of skill, like the clean, snatch, swing or Turkish get-up. These clinics focus on form and technique and are taught by StrongFirst certified trainers.

childcare

Childcare for $3 an hour? Let us  watch the kids while you watch your form. Our dedicated childcare providers will keep your kids occupied with fun and healthy activities at a price you can actually afford. We want our members to focus all of their energy on their workouts during class time, and leaving your little ones with a qualified caretaker goes a long way towards getting you in the mood. Purchase single sessions for $3 or a pack of 10 for $30.

bodyweight Strength and Mobility

For half of this class we focus on the major bodyweight exercises like push-ups, pull-ups, single leg squat variations, hanging leg raises, and other calisthenics. The other half of the class emphasizes dynamic mobility through animal movements, yoga flows, and joint mobilization.

SIMPLE AND SINISTER

If you could only do two exercises for the rest of your life, they should be the kettlebell swing and the Turkish get-up. These classes will focus on the technique and skill of these two critical movements within a very simple, yet sinister, workout.

KETTLEBELL QUICKIE

This class is a shorter, 30 minute version of the Kettlebell Strength or Kettlebell Speed classes. If you need to squeeze in a workout during a busy day, or just want to ease in to the full hour long classes, this is for you.

bhkc yoga

BHKC yoga classes are taught in the "vinyasa" style, linking one pose to the next. The pace is moderate but challenging, with a focus on controlled, deliberate movement. This approach builds isometric strength, increases joint mobility, and sharpens the mindfulness necessary for balance.  Rather than simply "stretching", the goal of the flexibility work here is to increase range-of-motion.

I have never been more committed to getting strong as I have been since starting here. Tana and Holly are extremely dedicated and patient trainers with a balance between being supportive and pushing you a little outside your comfort zone each time. It’s fun, welcoming and the day is not complete if you don’t get your “kettle hell’ in. I love it, and now my house mates have caught the bug, and we all go together every Saturday morning. Thank you for creating an amazing, fun, and inspiring place to come to each day!

The family also loves snowboarding, reading, movies, and music.

Bleeding Hearts Trainer Lara Messersmith-Glavin

Lara Messersmith-Glavin

Lara is StrongFirst Level 1 certified, and brings with her years of experience in team sports (primarily basketball) and various fighting arts, including an advanced belt in Tum Pai Kajukenbo and medals in submission grappling. Inside the gym, she focuses on careful technique and individual development.  She takes a holistic approach to training, seeing physical health and strength as fundamentally linked with emotional and social well-being.  She loves the community aspect of Bleeding Hearts, and values the supportive, body-positive atmosphere created by the trainers and the clients.

Outside the gym, when Lara isn’t teaching, writing, or organizing, she’s often found onstage doing spoken word performance.  She’s also a mom, a pirate, and an arm-wrestling champ.

Lenny Bennett

In 2011, Lenny and Erin, after 18 years of marriage, decided to take the plunge and adopted a 7-year-old boy.  Shortly thereafter Lenny realized he needed to really step up and model an over-all healthy lifestyle for his son, Isiah. When looking for a fitness component to round-out this lifestyle change, he found these strange things called kettlebells, an exercise modality and school of thought completely different from anything he’d experienced before, and he could immediately identify its potential for true transformation.

Over the years his attachment to, and appreciation for this community had grown to the point where it was a completely natural next step to join the team, earning his NASM CPT, CKT1 from IKFF, and most recently his SFG1 from StrongFirst.

A wine bar owner by night, he can be found participating in class several times a week as well coaching classes occasionally because he loves the opportunity. “Something I love is to help people find their strengths, and then exploit them.  We all need to have certain fitness levels in differing areas, but what are you REALLY good at?  Let’s find out!

Rachel Sterry Bleeding Hearts Trainer.JPG

Rachel Sterry

Rachel grew up in Louisville, KY and made her way to Portland via Maine, and Seattle picking up her undergraduate degree from Colby college, a license in Naturopathic medicine, power yoga teacher training, NASM personal training certificate, a husband, two step-kids and a baby along the way.

By day, she seeks to help moms regain and balance their health. By night she loves furthering her knowledge of body mechanics, form, and strength patterns. Rachel believes that health stems from the interplay between movement, nourishment and restoration, and finding the Bleeding Hearts Kettlebell Club has been an integral part of her own perfect health combo.

When not in the gym, Rachel fills her time by practicing medicine, bike commuting, doing yoga, experimenting with new recipes, gardening and weekend hikes with her family.

Brian Bell StrongFirst certified trainer.jpg

brian bell

Brian first experienced a kettlebell workout in New Orleans, LA where he was born and raised.  Since moving to Portland in 2014, he’s had the opportunity to explore them deeper and develop a passion for technique, and for practicing the skill of strength, rather than the pursuit of a certain physique.  He strives for safe and excellent technique, and knows first-hand that excellent technique looks different from person to person.  He has had the opportunity to learn from some of the best StrongFirst certified trainers in Portland, and found an awesome family at Bleeding Hearts, originally as a client.  Brian earned his StrongFirst SFG1 certification in September 2017, and hopes to use his passion for functional fitness to help clients achieve their goals in the same way his trainers and coaches have helped him work towards his.

Outside of the gym, Brian is a mechanical engineer in the hydropower industry, and enjoys working on house projects, sunshine, and beer.  He is an animal lover and often communicates with dogs better than people.  He has two dogs, two cats, and loves couch cuddles.  He most enjoys spending time with his amazing wife Bridget and daughter Noretta.  Without those two incredibly strong women in his life, he would not be the man he is today.

Chris Davis

Chris has been teaching yoga in Portland for the past five years, mostly vinyasa classes to mixed levels, all over town.  He started practicing a couple of years before he turned 40, and while it's helped him to move better and manage a lot of wrist and back problems, it's also led him to spend a lot more time upside down than he ever expected to do in middle age.  He does other stuff too:  bike, swim, learning to work with gymnastic rings, and just completing a Budokon Calisthenics training.  He draws and paints.  In his free time, he reads comics, eats chocolate, listens to different kinds of dance music and dub, and stares into space.
